Across the region

When the Railroad came through the town in 1882, Tallapoosa was a popular travel destination. The Lithia Springs Resort Hotel reserved rooms from across the nation and Europe starting in 1882. The city boasted of having the largest of its kind east of the Mississippi. A train ride from New York to Tallapoosa totaled more than $1100 for a round trip ticket that would have cost only $38, at that time.

When Prohibition of 1920 was made law and the Great Depression of 1929 began, the hotel soon would be left in ruins. The hotel would be dismantled and used as building materials for locals who built homes in the area.
